The gruesome attack reportedly occurred in Spanish Lakes Fairways, a 55-plus living community in Fort Pierce, about 68 miles north of West Palm Beach, Florida.
Residents in the plush community claim they last saw the 85-year-old woman walking her dog close to where the beast was lurking, according to WPTV.
The witnesses claim the dog was first caught by the alligator.
The woman agitatedly fought against the wild animal for her pet but quickly became the victim, witnesses say.
The name of the woman has not been released.
The woman's body was recovered following the attack, according to CBS12.
Ken Mascara, the county sheriff, said the alligator was fully grown and close to 11 feet long.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) responded to panicked calls from witnesses in the homes.
The alligator was captured by officials and removed from the area.
Robert Lilly, the nuisance alligator trapper on the scene, told WPBF about the struggle to get the alligator out of the nearby pond.
"Snagged him on the bottom. He never surfaced. He stayed down the whole time," Lilly said.
"Got a second hook in him and then a hard line in him so we could get him up."
Lilly estimated that the animal weighs between 600 to 700 pounds.
The St. Lucie County Sheriff's Office closed three roads in the area while investigating the violent scene.
According to WPTV, wildlife officials confirmed the death of the 85-year-old.
The officials also clarified that alligator attacks are extremely rare.

That's horrible.

I don't live in Florida. So when a gator kills someone; is the gator hunted? killled? What exactly is the justification? I mean; it is a freakin carnivore.

Don't live in Florida, but spend a decent amount of time down there. Seems the answer is yes, they do their best to hunt down and kill the offending gator. Usually pretty successfully. Situations like this are a shame but just "the cost of business" of living south florida. Officials do their best to make it as safe as possible while also preserving nature.

The story in this article is just so relatable. Dog gets attacked, elderly woman tries to intervene. Gator grabs her instead. Of course it's probably not the best idea to try to intervene and just let the dog die. But can't blame her for trying, pets are like family to a lot of people. There are also plenty of videos of dogs being attacked and the owner successfully intervening and saving the dog. So it's not a hopeless attempt. Not sure how many were elderly women though.

Scariest of all, is that situation in Disney a while back. imagine a gator grabbing your 3 year old.

I think the reasoning behind hunting down the offending gators after a human attack is that it's thought once they have attacked a human they are more likely to attack another human, more then a gator that hasn't eaten a human before. Not sure how true it actually is.

It's been proven to be true of other animals, sharks, lions, etc. Animals that shy away from humans normally, but some become "maneaters" and are much more dangerous to humans.
